In every moment people are seeking happiness. Yet because they do not know what happiness really is or where to find it, they end up looking for anything that will fill the gap they feel.
It reminds me of scenes in cartoons. You know how sometimes you’ll see a cartoon character riddled with bullet holes, for emphasis they take a drink and leak water everywhere. That is how most people live their lives. Their attention is spread over so many distractions that they have lost the ability to direct it and so create power and choice in their experience.
They go seeking more money. More self-esteem… more happiness… more excitement… more energy… and more enthusiasm. Yet it doesn’t matter how much more they get, because as soon as they get it they promiscuously spill it all over the place.
As a result people go through life feeling empty and lacking. And whatever they do to get more… costs more to get. So no matter what they do, they never get ahead.
We can see this demonstrated in most people’s relationship to money. However much they earn; they spend almost all their income and often more. If they start earning more; their cost of living goes up with their income. So no matter how much they earn, they never retain any. Often it just means that they have bigger debts.
Because the same philosophy to life drives other areas of life, the same thing happens in other areas of their life.
They want more attention… yet no matter how much more they get, it’s never enough, they need more because whatever they get in; they leak it straight out again.
The leaks come from all the things we give our energy, attention and thought to outside of us.
In short everything we ever do that is caused by being too inhibited to stand up and say ‘this is me’. This is who I am… This is how I feel and this is what I am going to do.
We can fix these leaks by first noticing them.
We can then identify why we allow our energy to just trickle out of us. This understanding once it is brought into the open, takes away most of its sting.
We become controlled (by people or events) when we feel as if we have no choice. When we reach the understanding that everything in our life is created by us, or in conjunction with us, we can no longer act powerless. Then we once again have to make the decision whether we will change or not.
Often even when people understand why they do what they do – which is mostly irrational – they still continue to do it. Even knowing that it is for no good reason. This is because emotionally they wish to hang onto the deeper beliefs that uphold this behaviour.
In the next chapter I’ll show you the most powerful shift in thinking you can ever make. This is the mindset that creates Billionaires, world famous Artists, Social Reformers, Inventors and others who change the course of history.
